GZIP

Format with .gzip extension was created by GNU Project. This file format serves for creation and compression of files. Its creators are misters Jean – Loup Gailly and Mark Adler. Both of them tried to create new software that would be able to replace current compression program on Linux. Main advantage of it is replacement of formats protected by patents, which limited their use.

When we look on its age, we can see that it is quite an old file format. It was created in 90s, more precisely on 31rd October, 1992. It was not completely stable, but 4 months later first stable version was released and it carried label v1.0. Date of this version is set on February, 1993. To open these files we can use one of best known application, which is 7 – Zip. It can handle creating, editing and unpacking of these files. If you want only to unpack them, you can use trail version of WinRaR that can be used for unlimited time. We prefer 7 – Zip as default application for opening, modifying and editing of files with .gz extension.
