LZH
File type commonly known as LHZ serves for compression and archiving of data. This file format uses two extension – .lzh and .lha. Its creator is programator Haruyasu Yoshizaki, his nickname was Yoshi. Originally it was known as LHarc, but after its complete rewrite it was renamed to LHx and later on it was known only as LH. Then it was renamed once more time to LHA, because there was another file format that used this name in MS – DOS. This file format is very popular in Japan till today. An interesting fact is that it was used to compress installation files of older games like Doom or Quake.
This file type known as LZH was created in 1988. In 90ě it was rivaling with format LZX. This one was created by Amiga. There is plenty of applications that can open them. First of all we can mention WinRaR, which is created by Russian programmers Eugen Roshalov and Alexander Roshalov. Then we can mention WinZip. Both of these files are available for free.
