conved in AI assistants: file conversion over MCP

You can now convert files right inside a conversation with an AI assistant. We have launched an MCP server that connects conved to Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and other tools. Ask "convert this Keynote presentation to PowerPoint" and the assistant takes care of it. There is nothing to install and no API key to copy.

What MCP is

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that Anthropic introduced in November 2024. It defines how an AI assistant discovers the tools available to it and how it calls them. Most assistants and code editors support it today; the specification lives at modelcontextprotocol.io.

Assistants handle simple conversions on their own, such as Markdown to HTML or CSV to a table. They get stuck on formats their built-in tools cannot read: Keynote, WordPerfect, DWG drawings, CorelDRAW, camera RAW photos, Kindle e-books or Garmin activity files. That is where conved and its hundreds of formats come in.

How to connect

The server address is https://www.conved.com/mcp.

  • Claude (web and apps): Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the address, then Connect.
  • ChatGPT: in Settings → Apps, turn on developer mode and add the address as a custom app.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http conved https://www.conved.com/mcp, then /mcp → conved → Authenticate.
  • Cursor, VS Code and others: add the address as an HTTP MCP server.

The first time, conved.com opens in your browser. Enter your e-mail, type in the code we send you and allow the connection. If you do not have an account yet, a free one is created. Connected apps are listed in your account and can be disconnected at any time.

What the assistant can do

  • Convert a file from a link, from text it writes itself (Markdown, HTML, CSV, SVG), or from your computer.
  • Read the result: text from a PDF, a spreadsheet as CSV or an image comes straight back into the conversation, so the assistant can summarise or analyse it.
  • Look at the result: it can turn a finished PDF or DOCX into an image of the first page and check how it came out.
  • Help with formats: it finds out what a file can be converted to and keeps an eye on job status and account limits.

Example prompts:

  • "Convert this Keynote presentation to PowerPoint: https://example.com/deck.key"
  • "I have an old WordPerfect letter. Turn it into a Word document."
  • "I need these Nikon NEF photos as JPG. Send me a link where I can upload them."
  • "Convert my Garmin FIT activity to GPX."
  • "Read this DjVu scan and summarise it in five bullet points."

Files on your computer

File conversion over MCP usually needs the file at a public URL, and assistants generally cannot pass on a chat attachment because only they can see it. conved solves this with a one-time upload link: the assistant gives you a page where you pick the file in your browser, then finishes the conversion. The link is valid for one hour and one file. Claude Code and other assistants that can run commands upload the file themselves, and small files up to 2 MB can be sent inside the request.

Limits and privacy

A free account has the same limits as the website: currently 60 conversions per hour and up to 100 MB per file. Uploaded files are deleted right after conversion, results after 14 days. We do not read your files or use them to train AI. A connected app can run conversions and see the account e-mail, conversion history and limits, nothing else.

What the server does not do: each conversion is one file in and one file out, with no options for quality, resolution or page range. Merging, PDF compression and watermarks are not available yet, and online videos cannot be converted through assistants. A multi-page document converted to an image format gives the first page only.

Setup steps for each app are on the AI assistants page; technical details are in the documentation.
