Convert NEF to JPG

Upload Nikon NEF or Coolpix NRW files and get full-resolution JPGs developed from the raw sensor data. Up to 10 photos at once, downloadable as ZIP.

Convert to JPG

NEF, the Nikon Electronic Format, has been Nikon's raw format since the D1 of 1999. A NEF stores 12 or 14 bits per pixel straight from the sensor, a JPEG preview, and Nikon's maker notes with the camera settings. A JPG has 8 bits per channel and a look that is already decided. Converting means making those decisions: white balance, colour, brightness. Below is what our converter decides for you, which NEF files it can read, and why the result will not be a copy of the JPEG from your camera.

Why convert NEF to JPG

The usual reasons are practical. A photo lab, a stock or competition portal, or a client wants JPG. Windows shows NEF thumbnails only with an extension installed, phones and most web services cannot open it at all. A D850 NEF easily has 50 MB or more, while a JPG of the same picture usually takes a fraction of that. Sometimes the camera was simply set to RAW only and you need something to share tonight.

Which NEF files can be converted

Nikon cameras offer several kinds of NEF. Our converter reads most of them, but one recent variant is not covered yet:

NEF typeTypical camerasConverts here
Lossless compressed, 12 or 14 bitmost DSLRs and Z modelsyes
Compressed (visually lossless)DSLRs, older Z modelsyes
UncompressedDSLRs such as D750, D850yes, if under 100 MB
NRWCoolpix compacts, e.g. P1000, P950yes
High Efficiency (HE, HE*)Z 9, Z 8, Z f, Z 6IIIno

High Efficiency NEF uses the TicoRAW codec and makes files roughly half (HE) or two thirds (HE*) the size of lossless NEF. Our converter cannot read it yet. If a Z 9 or Z 8 file fails, check RAW recording in the photo shooting menu. Existing HE files can be exported to JPEG in Nikon NX Studio, or converted to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter and then uploaded here as DNG.

How the conversion works

We develop the NEF from the raw sensor data. The embedded preview is ignored. The settings are fixed: white balance as stored by the camera, AHD demosaicing, conversion to sRGB with 8 bits per channel, automatic brightness that lets about 1 % of the pixels reach white, highlights clipped without recovery. No noise reduction, no sharpening, no lens profile. The JPG is saved at quality 90 in full resolution, 8256 × 5504 pixels for a D850, and rotated upright. Bit depth makes no visible difference here: a 14-bit NEF has more room for editing, but the JPG is 8-bit either way.

The camera's EXIF data, including lens and GPS position, is not written to the JPG. ExifTool copies it over afterwards: exiftool -TagsFromFile DSC_0001.NEF -all:all DSC_0001.jpg.

Why colours and contrast differ from the camera JPEG

What you saw on the rear screen was Nikon's own rendering, built from settings that live only in Nikon software:

  • Picture Control. Standard and Vivid add contrast, saturation and sharpening. Monochrome affects only the JPEG, the raw data stays in colour, so a black-and-white shot develops in colour here.
  • Active D-Lighting. It keeps highlights safe and lifts shadows in the camera JPEG. The raw development lacks that lift and shadows look darker.
  • Vignette control and Auto distortion control. Wide-angle lenses show darker corners and curved straight lines.
  • High ISO noise reduction is applied to the JPEG only, so high-ISO shots look grainier.

To get exactly the camera's rendering, extract the embedded JPEG, which on most Nikon models is full size: exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw DSC_0001.NEF > DSC_0001.jpg. Or open the file in NX Studio, which applies the Picture Control you set.

A bit of NEF history

NEF is a proprietary format based on TIFF and Nikon has never published its specification. In April 2005 Adobe's Thomas Knoll pointed out that the D2X and D2Hs encrypted the white balance in their NEF files. Nikon offered access through its SDK, independent developers soon decoded it, and the dispute became a strong argument for Adobe's open DNG format, published in 2004, gain support. Archives such as the US National Archives still recommend DNG over proprietary raw files for long-term preservation. More technical detail is on the NEF format page.

Other ways to convert NEF to JPG

  • Nikon NX Studio is free, reads every NEF including HE, applies Picture Control and Active D-Lighting and exports whole folders. For hundreds of photos it beats our limit of 10 files per hour.
  • macOS Preview or Photos: open the NEF, then File → Export as JPEG.
  • Windows 10 and 11: the Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store enables thumbnails and opening NEF in Photos.

Our converter is handy on a phone, on Linux, on a borrowed computer, or when you only need a handful of JPGs without installing anything. Shooting Canon as well? See CR2 to JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Nikon Z 9 or Z 8 NEF fail to convert?

It is most likely a High Efficiency (HE or HE*) NEF, which our converter cannot read yet. Export it to JPEG in Nikon NX Studio, or convert it to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter and upload the DNG.

Why are the colours different from the photo on my camera?

The camera JPEG uses Picture Control, Active D-Lighting and lens corrections. Our converter develops the raw data neutrally with the camera's white balance and none of these adjustments.

Can I convert NRW files from a Coolpix?

Yes. NRW is the Coolpix variant of NEF and is developed the same way.

Does the JPG keep the 14-bit quality?

No. JPG stores 8 bits per channel. The full resolution is kept, but hold on to the NEF if you want to edit the photo later.

Is the EXIF and GPS data kept?

No, the JPG has no camera EXIF block. Copy it back with ExifTool: exiftool -TagsFromFile file.NEF -all:all file.jpg.

How large can a NEF file be?

Up to 100 MB per file. Uncompressed 14-bit NEFs from 45-megapixel bodies come close to that limit; lossless compressed files are much smaller.
