A PDF describes a page as text, vector shapes, fonts and embedded pictures. A JPG is a grid of pixels and nothing else. Converting PDF to JPG therefore means rendering the page, exactly as a PDF viewer does on screen, and saving that picture. After that, nothing in the file is text any more.
Why people convert PDF to JPG
- An upload form accepts only images. Job portals, online shops and booking systems often want a certificate, invoice or confirmation as JPG or PNG.
- A flyer, menu or poster should appear as a picture in a social media post or chat. Sent as a PDF, it arrives as a file the other side has to download and open.
- You need a preview image of a document for a website, presentation or product listing.
- The recipient uses an old phone or a locked-down computer without a PDF reader. Every device can show a JPG.
What our converter does with the PDF
We rasterise the page at 150 dpi and save it as JPG with quality 90. At this quality the colour channels are not subsampled, so red text and thin coloured lines stay sharp instead of bleeding. An A4 page comes out at 1240 × 1754 pixels, a US Letter page at 1275 × 1650.
- Only the first page is converted. One JPG file holds one image, so a 20-page PDF gives you page 1. For the whole document choose CBZ as the target format. A CBZ file is an ordinary ZIP archive (rename it to .zip if your system does not open it) with every page as a separate JPG, numbered 0001.jpg, 0002.jpg and so on, again at 150 dpi and quality 90.
- Transparent areas become white. JPG cannot store transparency. Some tools leave it undefined and the result shows a black background. We flatten the page onto white.
- Links, bookmarks, form fields and comments stop working. They remain visible as pixels, but nothing can be clicked, selected or searched.
- Fonts: fonts embedded in the PDF render exactly. A font that is not embedded is replaced by a similar one, which can shift line breaks.
Common problems: blurry image, black background, only one page
PDF to JPG is blurry or low resolution
150 dpi is plenty for screens, e-mail and web forms. Print shops usually expect 300 dpi, and a 150 dpi A4 page printed at full size looks softer than the original. If the goal is printing, send the PDF itself. Text and vector graphics in a PDF print at the printer's full resolution, which no exported image matches.
PDF to JPG converts only the first page
That is expected for JPG. Use PDF to CBZ for all pages, or split the PDF first if you only need a few of them.
The JPG is too large for an upload limit
A page of plain text at 150 dpi typically ends up at a few hundred kilobytes, a page full of photos can exceed 1 MB. If a portal is strict, crop the image or scale it down in any photo editor.
Text in the JPG cannot be copied
Right, it is now a picture. For editable text convert PDF to DOCX instead.

Other ways to convert PDF to JPG
On a Mac, open the PDF in Preview, choose File > Export and select JPEG; Apple describes the steps here. Windows has no built-in PDF to image export. A screenshot (Win + Shift + S) works for a quick preview, but the resolution is limited to what your screen shows.
Our converter is useful when you have no software at hand, work on a phone or Linux, or need several PDFs at once: up to 10 files in one go, results downloadable as a ZIP or sent by e-mail as a link. Files are processed on our own servers in the Czech Republic. The uploaded PDF is deleted right after conversion, the JPG after 14 days. Going the other way is just as simple: JPG to PDF.
